Having furniture made in Bali: what it really means, in photos

Here is what you never see when you buy furniture in a shop: the hands that make it. From raw timber to a container ready to sail, every step of your order is photographed and sent to you. Whether you are furnishing a whole house or a business, it is the same process — and the same workshops.

Step 1

The wood: selection, cutting, drying

It all starts at the sawmill: selecting teak and suar slabs, cutting them, then drying — the invisible step that makes all the difference. Badly dried wood will crack once it is in your home, in a dry or air-conditioned climate; it is the first thing our agent checks before starting production.

Step 2

Handcrafted production

Mortise-and-tenon joinery, carving, hand-woven cord: each piece passes through the hands of several specialised craftsmen, the way wood was worked everywhere fifty years ago. During this step, our agent visits the workshop and sends you photos of YOUR furniture in progress — you follow your order as if you were there.

Step 3

Finishing and quality control

Fine sanding, oil or varnish, checks on gaps and plumb: before being cleared for shipping, every piece is inspected by our agent — dimensions, finish, stability. Whatever fails the inspection goes back to the workshop.

Step 4

Packing and container loading

Every piece is packed individually — kraft paper, foam, cardboard, strapping — then the container is loaded to the centimetre: furniture braced and strapped, packages numbered and labelled. You receive photos of the loading before it leaves port, and the same care applies to a full container as to a shared container.

Made to measure, in practice

Everything starts from your request: a sketch, a drawing, an inspiration photo with dimensions. The craftsmen draw the piece, our agent approves the wood and its drying, production begins — allow 6 to 8 weeks depending on the piece, 10 to 12 for a design created especially for you, then shipping. The full process, from the client's side, is described in "How it works", and the furniture families available in the catalogue.
